அப்பொழுது சாமுவேல் தைலக்குப்பியை எடுத்து, அவன் தலையின் மேல் வார்த்து, அவனை முத்தஞ்செய்து: கர்த்தர் உன்னைத் தம்முடைய சுதந்தரத்தின்மேல் தலைவனாக அபிஷேகம் பண்ணினார் அல்லவா?

சாமுவேல் சிறப்புக்குரிய எண்ணெய் இருக்கும் ஜாடியை எடுத்தான். அதனைச் சவுலின் தலையில் ஊற்றி, முத்தமிட்டுச் சொன்னான், “கர்த்தர் உன்னை இஸ்ரவேல் ஜனங்களின் தலைவனாக அபிஷேகித்திருக்கிறார். கர்த்தருடைய ஜனங்களை நீ கட்டுப்படுத்துவாய். அவர்களைச் சுற்றியுள்ள எதிரிகளிடமிருந்து காப்பாற்றுவாய். கர்த்தர் உன்னை அவருடைய ஜனங்களின் மேல் அரசனாக்கியுள்ளார். இது உண்மை என்பதை நிரூபிக்க ஒரு அடையாளம் உள்ளது.
