தாணையம் இருந்த பெலிஸ்தரைச் சவுல் முறிய அடித்தான் என்றும், இஸ்ரவேலர் பெலிஸ்தருக்கு அருவருப்பானார்கள் என்றும், இஸ்ரவேலெல்லாம் கேள்விப்பட்டபோது, ஜனங்கள் சவுலுக்குப் பின்செல்லும்படி கில்காலுக்கு வரவழைக்கப்பட்டார்கள்.

முகாமிட்டிருந்த பெலிஸ்தர்களைச் சவுல் முறியடித்தான் என்றும், இஸ்ரவேலர்கள் பெலிஸ்தர்களுக்கு அருவருப்பானார்கள் என்றும், இஸ்ரவேலெல்லாம் கேள்விப்பட்டபோது, மக்கள் சவுலுக்குப் பின்செல்லும்படி கில்காலுக்கு வரவழைக்கப்பட்டார்கள்.

இஸ்ரவேலர் அனைவரும் செய்தியைக் கேட்டனர். அவர்கள், “சவுல் பெலிஸ்தரின் தலைவனைக் கொன்றான். இப்போது உண்மையில் பெலிஸ்தர் இஸ்ரவேலரை வெறுக்கிறார்கள்!” என்றனர். கில்காலில் கூடும்படி சவுல் இஸ்ரவேலரை அழைத்தான்.
