என் கை அல்ல, பெலிஸ்தரின் கையே அவன்மேல் விழட்டும் என்று சவுல் நினைத்துக்கொண்டு, சவுல் தாவீதை நோக்கி: இதோ, என் மூத்த குமாரத்தியாகிய மேராவை உனக்கு மனைவியாகக் கொடுப்பேன்; நீ எனக்கு நல்ல சேவகனாய்மாத்திரம் இருந்து, கர்த்தருடைய யுத்தங்களை நடத்து என்றான்.

என்னுடைய கை அல்ல, பெலிஸ்தர்களின் கையே அவன்மேல் விழட்டும் என்று சவுல் நினைத்துக்கொண்டு, சவுல் தாவீதை நோக்கி: இதோ, என்னுடைய மூத்த மகளாகிய மேராவை உனக்கு மனைவியாகக் கொடுப்பேன்; நீ எனக்கு நல்ல தைரியமுள்ளவனாக மாத்திரம் இருந்து, கர்த்தருடைய யுத்தங்களை நடத்து என்றான்.

ஆனால், சவுல் தாவீதைக் கொல்ல விரும்பி தந்திரமான ஒரு வழியை யோசித்தான். அவன், “என் மூத்த மகள் மேராப்பை உனக்கு மணமுடித்துத் தருவேன், பின் நீ வலிமை மிக்க வீரனாகலாம். என் மகன் போல இருக்கலாம்! பிறகு நீ போய் கர்த்தருடைய யுத்தங்களை நடத்தலாம்!” என்றான். மேலும் சவுல், “இவனை நான் கொல்லாமல், எனக்காக பெலிஸ்தியர்களால் கொல்லச்செய்வேன்” என்று எண்ணினான்.

பின்பு சவுல், “என்கை அவன் மேல் படாமல் பெலிஸ்தியர் கை அவன் மேல் படட்டும்” என்று எண்ணி, தாவீதை நோக்கி, “இதோ என் மூத்த மகள் மேராபு! அவளை உனக்கு மணம் முடித்துக் கொடுப்பேன். நீ மட்டும் வீரம்முள்ளவனாக செயல்பட்டு ஆண்டவரின் படைகளை நடத்திச் செல்” என்றார்.
