ரெகொபெயாம் எருசலேமுக்கு வந்தபோது, இஸ்ரவேல் வம்சத்தாரோடே யுத்தம்பண்ணவும், ராஜ்யத்தைச் சாலொமோனின் குமாரனாகிய தன்னிடமாகத் திருப்பிக்கொள்ளவும், யூதா வம்சத்தார் பென்யமீன் கோத்திரத்தார் அனைவருமாகிய தெரிந்துகொள்ளப்பட்ட யுத்தவீரர் லட்சத்து எண்பதினாயிரம் பேரைக் கூட்டினான்.

ரெகொபெயாம் எருசலேமுக்குப் போய் யூதா மற்றும் பென்யமீன் கோத்திரத்தாரை ஒன்று சேர்த்தான். இது 1,80,000 பேர் கொண்ட படையாயிற்று. அரசன் இஸ்ரவேல் ஜனங்களுக்கு எதிராகச் சண்டை போட விரும்பினான். தனது ஆட்சி பீடத்தைத் திரும்பப்பெற விரும்பினான்.

எருசலேமுக்குத் திரும்பி வந்த சாலமோனின் மகனாகிய ரெகபெயாம் இஸ்ரயேலர்மீது போர் தொடுக்கவும் அந்நாட்டைத் தன்னுடைய ஆட்சிக்குள் கொண்டு வரவும் எண்ணினான். இதற்கென அவன் யூதாவின் வீட்டிலிருந்தும் பென்யமின் குலத்திலிருந்தும் இலட்சத்து எண்பதினாயிரம் போர் வீரர்களைத் திரட்டினான்.
