ஆனால் சில கயவர்கள், “இவன் எவ்வாறு நம்மைக் காப்பாற்றுவான்?” என்றனர். அவர்கள் சவுலைப் பற்றி கெட்டவற்றைக் கூறி அவனுக்கு அன்பளிப்புக்களைக் கொடுக்க மறுத்தனர். சவுல் ஒன்றும் கூறவில்லை. நாகாஸ் அம்மோனிய அரசன், காத் மற்றும் ரூபன் கோத்திரங்களை காயப்படுத்திக் கொண்டிருந்தான். அவன் ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்களின் வலது கண்ணை பிடுங்கி யாரும் அவர்களுக்கு உதவி செய்யாதபடி தடுத்தான். யோர்தான் நதி ஓரத்தில் வாழ்ந்த இஸ்ரவேல் ஆண்களுக்கும் அப்படியே செய்தான். எனவே 7,000 இஸ்ரவேலர்கள் அம்மோனியரிடமிருந்து தப்பி யாபேஸ் கீலேயாத்திற்கு வந்தனர்.
