யோனத்தான் தன் ஆயுததாரியாகிய வாலிபனை நோக்கி: விருத்தசேதனம் இல்லாதவர்களுடைய அந்தத் தாணையத்திற்குப் போவோம் வா; ஒருவேளை கர்த்தர் நமக்காக ஒரு காரியம் செய்வார்; அநேகம்பேரைக் கொண்டாகிலும், கொஞ்சம் பேரைக் கொண்டாகிலும், ரட்சிக்கக் கர்த்தருக்குத் தடையில்லை என்றான்.

யோனத்தான் தன் ஆயுததாரியான வாலிபனை பார்த்து: விருத்தசேதனம் இல்லாதவர்களுடைய அந்த முகாமிற்குப் போவோம் வா; ஒருவேளை கர்த்தர் நமக்காக ஒரு காரியம் செய்வார்; அநேகம் பேரைக்கொண்டோ, கொஞ்சம்பேரைக்கொண்டோ, இரட்சிக்கக் கர்த்தருக்குத் தடையில்லை என்றான்.

யோனத்தான் தன்னுடைய ஆயுதங்களைச் சுமந்து வந்த இளம் உதவியாளனிடம், “வா, நாம் அந்நியரின் முகாமுக்குப் போவோம், அவர்களைத் தோற்கடிக்க ஒருவேளை கர்த்தர் நமக்கு உதவலாம்! கர்த்தரை யாராலும் தடுக்க முடியாது. நமது எண்ணிக்கை அதிகமோ அல்லது குறைவோ அது காரியமல்ல” என்றான்.

யோனத்தான் தம் படைக்கலன்களை வைத்திருந்த ஊழியனை நோக்கி “வா, இந்த விருத்தசேதனம் அற்றோரின் எல்லைக்காவலுக்குக் கடந்து செல்வோம். ஒரு வேளை ஆண்டவர் நம் சார்பாகச் செயல்படுவார். ஏனெனில், சிலரைக் கொண்டோ பலரைக் கொண்டோ மீட்பு அளிப்பதில் ஆண்டவருக்குத் தடையில்லை” என்றார்.
