கர்த்தர் சாமுவேலை நோக்கி: நீ இவனுடைய முகத்தையும், இவனுடைய சரீரவளர்ச்சியையும் பார்க்கவேண்டாம்; நான் இவனைப் புறக்கணித்தேன்; மனுஷன் பார்க்கிறபடி நான் பாரேன்; மனுஷன் முகத்தைப் பார்ப்பான்: கர்த்தரோ இருதயத்தைப் பார்க்கிறார் என்றார்.

கர்த்தர் சாமுவேலை பார்த்து: நீ இவனுடைய முகத்தையும், இவனுடைய சரீர வளர்ச்சியையும் பார்க்கவேண்டாம்; நான் இவனைப் புறக்கணித்தேன்; மனிதன் பார்க்கிறபடி நான் பார்க்கமாட்டேன்; மனிதன் முகத்தைப் பார்ப்பான்; கர்த்தரோ இருதயத்தைப் பார்க்கிறார் என்றார்.

ஆனால் கர்த்தர் சாமுவேலிடம், “எலியாப் உயரமானவன், அழகானவன். ஆனால் அப்படி சிந்திக்க வேண்டாம். ஜனங்கள் பார்க்கிறபடி தேவன் கவனிக்கிறதில்லை. ஜனங்கள் ஒருவனின் வெளித் தோற்றத்தைப் பார்க்கிறார்கள். கர்த்தரோ அவன் இருதயத்தைப் பார்க்கிறார். எலியாப் சரியானவன் அல்ல” என்றார்.

ஆனால், ஆண்டவர் சாமுவேலிடம், “அவன் தோற்றத்தையும், உயரத்தையும் பார்க்காதே; ஏனெனில், நான் அவனைப் புறக்கணித்துவிட்டேன். மனிதர் பார்ப்பது போல் நான் பார்ப்பதில்லை. மனிதர் முகத்தைப் பார்க்கின்றனர்; ஆண்டவரோ அகத்தைப் பார்க்கின்றார்” என்றார்.

But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.
