இவர்கள் ஒருநாள் வாழ்வை இன்பமென்றெண்ணி, கறைகளும் இலச்சைகளுமாயிருந்து; உங்களோடே விருந்துண்கையில் தங்கள் வஞ்சனைகளில் உல்லாசமாய் வாழ்கிறவர்கள்;

நீங்கள் நினைக்கிறபடி இவர்கள் வெறிகொண்டவர்களல்ல, பொழுது விடிந்து மூன்றாம் மணி வேளையாயிருக்கிறதே.

ஐயோ! யாருக்கு வேதனை யாருக்குத் துக்கம்? யாருக்குச் சண்டைகள்? யாருக்குப் புலம்பல்? யாருக்குக் காரணமில்லாத காயங்கள்? யாருக்கு இரத்தங்கலங்கின கண்கள்?

களியாட்டும் வெறியும், வேசித்தனமும் காமவிகாரமும், வாக்குவாதமும் பொறாமையும் உள்ளவர்களாய் நடவாமல், பகலிலே நடக்கிறவர்கள்போலச் சீராய் நடக்கக்கடவோம்.

நீங்கள் பாவஞ்செய்யாமல் நீதிக்கேற்க விழித்துக்கொண்டு, தெளிந்தவர்களாயிருங்கள்; சிலர் தேவனைப்பற்றி அறிவில்லாதிருக்கிறார்களே; உங்களுக்கு வெட்கமுண்டாக இதைச் சொல்லுகிறேன்.

அபிகாயில் நாபாலிடத்தில் வந்தபோது, இதோ, ராஜவிருந்துக்கு ஒப்பான விருந்து அவன் வீட்டிலே நடந்தது; அவன் இருதயம் களித்திருந்தது; அவன் மிகவும் வெறித்துமிருந்தான்; ஆகையால் பொழுது விடியுமட்டும் சிறியகாரியமானாலும் பெரிய காரியமானாலும், ஒன்றையும் அவனுக்கு அறிவிக்கவில்லை.

கனநித்திரை மனுஷர் மேல் இறங்கி, அவர்கள் படுக்கையின்மேல் அயர்ந்திருக்கையில்,

என் இருதயம் திகைத்தது; திகில் என்னைத் திடுக்கிடப்பண்ணிற்று; எனக்கு இன்பந்தந்த இரவு பயங்கரமாயிற்று.

அவர்கள் திராட்சரம் குடித்து, பொன்னும் வெள்ளியும் வெண்கலமும் இரும்பும் மரமும் கல்லுமாகிய தேவர்களைப் புகழ்ந்தார்கள்.

உங்கள் இருதயங்கள் பெருந்திண்டியினாலும் வெறியினாலும் லவுகீக கவலைகளினாலும் பாரமடையாதபடிக்கும், நீங்கள் நினையாத நேரத்தில் அந்த நாள் உங்கள்மேல் வராதபடிக்கும் எச்சரிக்கையாயிருங்கள்.

ஆதலால், தூங்குகிற நீ விழித்து, மரித்தோரை விட்டு எழுந்திரு, அப்பொழுது கிறிஸ்து உன்னைப் பிரகாசிப்பிப்பாரென்று சொல்லியிருக்கிறார்.
