அஸ்தோத் ஊரார் மறுநாள் காலமே எழுந்திருந்து வந்தபோது, இதோ, தாகோன் கர்த்தருடைய பெட்டிக்கு முன்பாகத் தரையிலே முகங்குப்புற விழுந்துகிடந்தது; அப்பொழுது அவர்கள் தாகோனை எடுத்து, அதை அதின் ஸ்தானத்திலே திரும்பவும் நிறுத்தினார்கள்.

தங்களுக்குக் கொடுக்கப்பட்ட காளையை அவர்கள் வாங்கி, அதை ஆயத்தம்பண்ணி: பாகாலே, எங்களுக்கு உத்தரவு அருளும் என்று காலைதொடங்கி மத்தியானமட்டும் பாகாலின் நாமத்தைச் சொல்லிக் கூப்பிட்டார்கள்; ஆனாலும் ஒரு சத்தமும் பிறக்கவில்லை, மறு உத்தரவு கொடுப்பாரும் இல்லை. அவர்கள் கட்டின பலிபீடத்திற்கு எதிரே குதித்து ஆடினார்கள்.

தீவுகள் அதைக் கண்டு பயப்படும், பூமியின் கடையாந்தரங்கள் நடுங்கும்; அவர்கள் சேர்ந்துவந்து,

வறட்சி அதின் தண்ணீர்கள்மேல் வரும் அவைகள் வறண்டுபோம்; அது விக்கிரக தேசம்; அருக்களிப்பான சிலைகளின்மேல் மனமயங்கியிருக்கிறார்கள்.

இவைகளை அவர்கள் கேட்டபொழுது, மூர்க்கமடைந்து, அவனைப் பார்த்துப் பல்லைக் கடித்தார்கள்.

அவளுடைய எஜமான்கள் தங்கள் ஆதாயத்து நம்பிக்கை அற்றுப்போயிற்றென்று கண்டு, பவுலையும் சீலாவையும் பிடித்து, சந்தைவெளியிலுள்ள அதிகாரிகளிடத்தில் இழுத்துக்கொண்டுபோனார்கள்.

இஸ்ரவேலரே, உதவிசெய்யுங்கள். நம்முடைய ஜனத்திற்கும் வேதப்பிரமாணத்திற்கும் இந்த ஸ்தலத்திற்கும் விரோதமாக எங்கும் எல்லாருக்கும் போதித்துவருகிறவன் இவன்தான்; இந்த தேவாலயத்திற்குள்ளே கிரேக்கரையும் கூட்டிக்கொண்டுவந்து, இந்தப் பரிசுத்த ஸ்தலத்தைத் தீட்டுப்படுத்தினான் என்று சத்தமிட்டார்கள்.

ஆகையால் பரலோகங்களே! அவைகளில் வாசமாயிருக்கிறவர்களே! களிகூருங்கள். பூமியிலும் சமுத்திரத்திலும் குடியிருக்கிறவர்களே! ஐயோ, பிசாசானவன் தனக்குக் கொஞ்சக்காலமாத்திரமுண்டென்று அறிந்து, மிகுந்த கோபங்கொண்டு, உங்களிடத்தில் இறங்கினபடியால், உங்களுக்கு ஆபத்துவரும் என்று சொல்லக்கேட்டேன்.

அந்த மிருகத்திற்கு அப்படிப்பட்ட அதிகாரங்கொடுத்த வலுசர்ப்பத்தை வணங்கினார்கள். அல்லாமலும்: மிருகத்திற்கு ஒப்பானவன் யார்? அதினோடே யுத்தம்பண்ணத்தக்கவன் யார்? என்று சொல்லி, மிருகத்தையும் வணங்கினார்கள்.

இவர்கள் ஒரே யோசனையுள்ளவர்கள்; இவர்கள் தங்கள் வல்லமையையும் அதிகாரத்தையும் மிருகத்திற்குக் கொடுப்பார்கள்.
