ஆனாலும் தன் தேசத்தைக் கடந்துபோகும்படி, எஸ்போனின் ராஜாவாகிய சீகோன் நமக்கு உத்தரவு கொடுக்கவில்லை; இந்நாளில் இருக்கிறதுபோல, உன் தேவனாகிய கர்த்தர் அவனை உன் கையில் ஒப்புக்கொடுக்கும்படி, அவன் மனதைக் கடினப்படுத்தி, அவன் இருதயத்தை உரங்கொள்ளப்பண்ணியிருந்தார்.

“ஆனால் எஸ்போனின் அரசன் சீகோன், நம்மை அவனது நாட்டின் வழியாக செல்ல அனுமதிக்கவில்லை. உங்கள் தேவனாகிய கர்த்தர் அவனை மிகவும் பிடிவாதமாக இருக்கச் செய்தார். சீகோனை நீங்கள் தோற்கடிக்கவே கர்த்தர் இவ்வாறு செய்தார். அது மெய்யாகவே நடந்ததை இன்று நாம் அறிவோம்!

ஆனால், எஸ்போனின் மன்னன் சீகோன் தன் நாட்டின் வழியே கடந்து செல்ல நமக்கு அனுமதியளிக்கவில்லை. இன்றும் இருப்பதுபோல் அவனை உங்கள் கையில் ஒப்படைக்கும் பொருட்டு, உங்கள் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவர் அவன் மனத்தைக் கடினப்படுத்தியிருந்தார்; அவன் இதயத்தையும் கல்லாக்கியிருந்தார்.⒫
