இஸ்ரவேல் புத்திரர் வாதாடினதினிமித்தமும், கர்த்தர் எங்கள் நடுவில் இருக்கிறாரா இல்லையா என்று அவர்கள் கர்த்தரைப் பரீட்சை பார்த்ததினிமித்தமும், அவன் அந்த ஸ்தலத்திற்கு மாசா என்றும் மேரிபா என்றும் பேரிட்டான்.

இஸ்ரவேலர்கள் வாதாடினதற்காகவும், கர்த்தர் எங்களுடைய நடுவில் இருக்கிறாரா இல்லையா என்று அவர்கள் கர்த்தரை சோதித்துப் பார்த்ததினாலும், அவன் அந்த இடத்திற்கு மாசா என்றும், மேரிபா என்றும் பெயரிட்டான்.

இவ்விடத்தில் ஜனங்கள் மோசேக்கு எதிராகத் திரும்பி கர்த்தரை சோதித்ததால் மோசே அதற்கு மேரிபா என்றும், மாசா என்றும் பெயரிட்டான். கர்த்தர் அவர்களோடு இருக்கிறாரா, இல்லையா என்று சோதிக்க ஜனங்கள் விரும்பினார்கள்.

இஸ்ரயேல் மக்கள் அங்கு வாதாடியதாலும் ஆண்டவர் தம்மோடு இருக்கிறாரா இல்லையா என்று சோதித்ததாலும், அவ்விடம் ‘மாசா’* என்றும் ‘மெரிபா’** என்றும் பெயரிட்டழைக்கப்பட்டது.
