யாக்கோபு ராகேலையும் சேர்ந்தான்; லேயாளைப்பார்க்கிலும் ராகேலை அவன் அதிகமாய் நேசித்து, பின்னும் ஏழு வருஷம் அவனிடத்தில் சேவித்தான்.

இந்த இருபது வருஷகாலம் உம்முடைய வீட்டிலே இருந்தேன்; பதினாலு வருஷம் உம்முடைய இரண்டு குமாரத்திகளுக்காகவும், ஆறு வருஷம் உம்முடைய மந்தைக்காகவும் உம்மிடத்தில் சேவித்தேன்; பத்துமுறை என் சம்பளத்தை மாற்றினீர்.

யாக்கோபு ராகேல்பேரில் பிரியப்பட்டு: உம்முடைய இளைய குமாரத்தியாகிய ராகேலுக்காக உம்மிடத்தில் ஏழு வருஷம் வேலைசெய்கிறேன் என்றான்.

அந்தப்படியே யாக்கோபு ராகேலுக்காக ஏழு வருஷம் வேலைசெய்தான்; அவள் பேரில் இருந்த பிரியத்தினாலே அந்த வருஷங்கள் அவனுக்குக் கொஞ்சநாளாகத் தோன்றினது.

லேயாள் அற்பமாய் எண்ணப்பட்டாள் என்று கர்த்தர் கண்டு, அவள் கர்ப்பந்தரிக்கும்படி செய்தார்; ராகேலோ மலடியாயிருந்தாள்.

ராகேல் யோசேப்பைப் பெற்றபின், யாக்கோபு லாபானை நோக்கி: நான் என் ஸ்தானத்திற்கும் என் தேசத்துக்கும் போக என்னை அனுப்பிவிடும்.

அவரால் நாங்கள் அந்நியராய் எண்ணப்படவில்லையா? அவர் எங்களை விற்று, எங்கள் பணத்தையும் வாயிலே போட்டுக்கொண்டார்.

அதற்கு நாங்கள்: எங்களுக்கு முதிர்வயதுள்ள தகப்பனாரும், அவருக்கு முதிர்வயதிலே பிறந்த ஒரு இளைஞனும் உண்டு என்றும், அவனுடைய தமையன் இறந்துபோனான் என்றும், அவன் ஒருவன்மாத்திரமே அவனைப் பெற்ற தாயாருக்கு இருப்பதினால் தகப்பனார் அவன்மேல் பட்சமாயிருக்கிறார் என்றும் என் ஆண்டவனுக்குச் சொன்னோம்.

அப்பொழுது உம்முடைய அடியானாகிய என் தகப்பனார்: என் மனைவி எனக்கு இரண்டு பிள்ளைகளைப் பெற்றாள்;

இரண்டு மனைவிகளையுடைய ஒருவன், ஒருத்தியின்மேல் விருப்பாயும் மற்றவள்மேல் வெறுப்பாயும் இருக்க, இருவரும் அவனுக்குப் பிள்ளைகளைப் பெற்றார்களேயாகில் முதற்பிறந்தவன் வெறுக்கப்பட்டவளின் புத்திரனானாலும்,

என் கை அல்ல, பெலிஸ்தரின் கையே அவன்மேல் விழட்டும் என்று சவுல் நினைத்துக்கொண்டு, சவுல் தாவீதை நோக்கி: இதோ, என் மூத்த குமாரத்தியாகிய மேராவை உனக்கு மனைவியாகக் கொடுப்பேன்; நீ எனக்கு நல்ல சேவகனாய்மாத்திரம் இருந்து, கர்த்தருடைய யுத்தங்களை நடத்து என்றான்.

யாக்கோபு சீரியாதேசத்துக்கு ஓடிப்போய், இஸ்ரவேல் ஒரு பெண்ணுக்காக ஊழியஞ்செய்து, ஒரு பெண்ணுக்காக ஆடு மேய்த்தான்.

இரண்டு எஜமான்களுக்கு ஊழியம் செய்ய ஒருவனாலும் கூடாது; ஒருவனைப் பகைத்து ஒருவனைச் சிநேகிப்பான். அல்லது ஒருவனைப் பற்றிக்கொண்டு மற்றவனை அசட்டைபண்ணுவான்; தேவனுக்கும் உலகப் பொருளுக்கும் ஊழியஞ்செய்ய உங்களால் கூடாது.

தகப்பனையாவது தாயையாவது என்னிலும் அதிகமாய் நேசிக்கிறவன் எனக்குப் பாத்திரன் அல்ல; மகனையாவது மகளையாவது என்னிலும் அதிகமாய் நேசிக்கிறவன் எனக்குப் பாத்திரன் அல்ல.

யாதொருவன் என்னிடத்தில் வந்து, தன் தகப்பனையும் தாயையும் மனைவியையும் பிள்ளைகளையும் சகோதரனையும் சகோதரிகளையும், தன் ஜீவனையும் வெறுக்காவிட்டால் எனக்குச் சீஷனாயிருக்கமாட்டான்.

தன் ஜீவனைச் சிநேகிக்கிறவன் அதை இழந்துபோவான்; இந்த உலகத்தில் தன் ஜீவனை வெறுக்கிறவனோ அதை நித்திய ஜீவகாலமாய்க் காத்துக்கொள்ளுவான்.
