நானும் இவரை அறியாதிருந்தேன்; இவர் இஸ்ரவேலுக்கு வெளிப்படும்பொருட்டாக, நான் ஜலத்தினாலே ஞானஸ்நானங் கொடுக்க வந்தேன் என்றான்.

இவரை நானும் அறியாதிருந்தேன். ஆனாலும் நான் தண்ணீரால் ஞானஸ்நானம் கொடுக்க வந்திருக்கிறேன். ஆகையால் இஸ்ரவேல் மக்கள் இயேசுதான் கிறிஸ்து என அறிந்துகொள்ள முடியும்.

இவர் யாரென்று எனக்கும் தெரியாதிருந்தது. ஆனால், இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களுக்கு இவரை வெளிப்படுத்தும் பொருட்டே நான் வந்துள்ளேன்; தண்ணீரால் திருமுழுக்குக் கொடுத்தும் வருகிறேன்” என்றார்.⒫
