அவ்வேளையிலே சீஷர்கள் இயேசுவினிடத்தில் வந்து: பரலோகராஜ்யத்தில் எவன் பெரியவனாயிருப்பான் என்று கேட்டார்கள்.

அவர் கப்பர்நகூமுக்கு வந்து, வீட்டிலே இருக்கும்போது, அவர்களை நோக்கி: நீங்கள் வழியிலே எதைக்குறித்து உங்களுக்குள்ளே தர்க்கம்பண்ணினீர்கள் என்று கேட்டார்.

அப்பொழுது செபதெயுவின் குமாரருடைய தாய் அவரிடத்தில் வந்து அவரைப்பணிந்து கொண்டு: உம்மிடத்தில் ஒரு விண்ணப்பம் பண்ணவேண்டும் என்றாள்.

விருந்துகளில் முதன்மையான இடங்களையும், ஜெப ஆலயங்களில் முதன்மையான ஆசனங்களையும்,

விருந்துக்கு அழைக்கப்பட்டவர்கள் பந்தியில் முதன்மையான இடங்களைத் தெரிந்துகொண்டதை அவர் பார்த்து, அவர்களுக்கு ஒரு உவமையைச் சொன்னார்:

அன்றியும் தங்களில் எவன் பெரியவனாயிருப்பான் என்று அவர்களுக்குள்ளே வாக்குவாதம் உண்டாயிற்று.

அல்லாமலும், எனக்கு அருளப்பட்ட கிருபையினாலே நான் சொல்லுகிறதாவது; உங்களில் எவனானாலும் தன்னைக்குறித்து எண்ணவேண்டியதற்கு மிஞ்சி எண்ணாமல், அவனவனுக்கு தேவன் பகிர்ந்த விசுவாச அளவின்படியே, தெளிந்த எண்ணமுள்ளவனாய் எண்ணவேண்டும்.

சகோதர சிநேகத்திலே ஒருவர்மேலொருவர் பட்சமாயிருங்கள்; கனம்பண்ணுகிறதிலே ஒருவருக்கொருவர் முந்திக்கொள்ளுங்கள்.

விக்கிரகாராதனை, பில்லிசூனியம், பகைகள், விரோதங்கள், வைராக்கியங்கள், கோபங்கள், சண்டைகள், பிரிவினைகள், மார்க்கபேதங்கள்,

நாம் ஆவியினாலே பிழைத்திருந்தால், ஆவிக்கேற்றபடி நடக்கவும் கடவோம்.

ஒன்றையும் வாதினாலாவது வீண்பெருமையினாலாவது செய்யாமல், மனத்தாழ்மையினாலே ஒருவரையொருவர் தங்களிலும் மேன்மையானவர்களாக எண்ணக்கடவீர்கள்.

நான் வீணாக ஓடினதும் வீணாகப் பிரயாசப்பட்டதுமில்லையென்கிற மகிழ்ச்சி கிறிஸ்துவின் நாளில் எனக்கு உண்டாயிருப்பதற்கு, ஜீவவசனத்தைப் பிடித்துக்கொண்டு, உலகத்திலே சுடர்களைப்போலப் பிரகாசிக்கிற நீங்கள்,

நான் சபைக்கு எழுதினேன்; ஆனாலும் அவர்களில் மேன்மையாயிருக்க விரும்புகிற தியோத்திரேப்பு என்பவன் எங்களை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளவில்லை.
