அவர் ஆயக்காரோடும் பாவிகளோடும் போஜனம்பண்ணுகிறதை வேதபாரகரும் பரிசேயரும் கண்டு, அவருடைய சீஷரை நோக்கி: அவர் ஆயக்காரரோடும் பாவிகளோடும் போஜனபானம் பண்ணுகிறதென்னவென்று கேட்டார்கள்.

இயேசு வரி வசூலிப்பவர்களோடும் பாவிகளோடும் சாப்பிடுகிறதை வேதபண்டிதர்களும் பரிசேயர்களும் பார்த்து, அவருடைய சீடர்களை நோக்கி: அவர் வரி வசூலிப்பவர்களோடும் பாவிகளோடும் சேர்ந்து சாப்பிடுவது ஏன் என்று கேட்டார்கள்.

அவர்களோடு வேதபாரகரும் பரிசேயரும் இருந்தனர். அவர்கள் பாவிகளோடும், வரி வசூல் செய்பவர்களோடும் சேர்ந்து இயேசு உணவு உட்கொள்வதைக் கண்டனர். அவர்கள் இயேசுவின் சீஷரை நோக்கி, “ஏன் இவர் வரிவசூல் செய்பவர்களோடும், பாவிகளுடனும் சேர்ந்து உணவு உண்கின்றார்?” என்று கேட்டனர்.

அவர் பாவிகளோடும் வரிதண்டுபவர்களோடும் உண்பதைப் பரிசேயரைச் சார்ந்த மறைநூல் அறிஞர் கண்டு, அவருடைய சீடரிடம், “இவர் வரிதண்டுபவர்களோடும் பாவிகளோடும் சேர்ந்து உண்பதேன்?” என்று கேட்டனர்.
