இயேசு பிரதியுத்தரமாக: நீங்கள் கேட்டுக்கொள்ளுகிறது இன்னது என்று உங்களுக்குத் தெரியவில்லை. நான் குடிக்கும் பாத்திரத்தில் நீங்கள் குடிக்கவும், நான் பெறும் ஸ்நானத்தை நீங்கள் பெறவும் கூடுமா என்றார். அதற்கு அவர்கள் கூடும் என்றார்கள்.

இயேசு மறுமொழியாக: நீங்கள் கேட்டுக்கொள்ளுகிறது இன்னது என்று உங்களுக்குத் தெரியவில்லை. நான் குடிக்கும் பாத்திரத்தில் நீங்கள் குடிக்கவும், நான் பெறும் இடத்தை நீங்கள் பெறவும் உங்களால் கூடுமா என்றார். அதற்கு அவர்கள்: கூடும் என்றார்கள்.

அதைக் கேட்ட இயேசு அவளது மகன்களிடம், “நீங்கள் என்ன வேண்டுகிறீர்கள் என்பதைப் புரிந்து கொள்ளவில்லை. நான் அனுபவிக்கப்போகும் துன்பத்தை நீங்கள் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள முடியுமா?” என்று கேட்டார். “ஆம், எங்களால் முடியும்” என்று அவர்கள் பதில் சொன்னார்கள்.

அதற்கு இயேசு, “நீங்கள் என்ன கேட்கிறீர்கள் என உங்களுக்குத் தெரியவில்லை. நான் குடிக்கப்போகும் துன்பக் கிண்ணத்தில் உங்களால் குடிக்க இயலுமா?” என்று கேட்டார். அவர்கள் “எங்களால் இயலும்” என்றார்கள்.
