எஸ்போனானது எமோரியரின் ராஜாவாகிய சீகோனின் பட்டணமாயிருந்தது; அவன் மோவாபியரின் முந்தின ராஜாவுக்கு விரோதமாக யுத்தம்பண்ணி, அர்னோன் வரைக்கும் இருந்த அவன் தேசத்தையெல்லாம் அவன் கையிலிருந்து பறித்துக்கொண்டான்.

எஸ்போன் நகரத்தில் தான் எமோரியரின் அரசனான சீகோன் வசித்து வந்தான். கடந்த காலத்தில் சீகோன், மோவாப் அரசனோடு சண்டை செய்திருக்கிறான். சீகோன் அர்னோன் ஆறுவரையுள்ள நிலத்தைக் கைப்பற்றிண்டான்.
